The first memory foam material was invented in the 1970’s by NASA. At that time, NASA was trying to come up with a material that could cushion the astronauts when taking off due to the high G levels. The material was invented yet never made it to any space program. Instead, several medical companies saw the potential of memory foam material and adapted it to be used in the medical industry to help relive bed sores.
When memory foam was first used, though it was effective, it was also very brittle and was not suitable for long term use. However, Tempur-Pedic, the swedish tempurpedic manufacturer was the first company to came up with a new version of memory foam material that was not only effective in the medical industry but also had a longer life span. Tempur-Pedic was also responsible for introducing tempurpedic mattresses and other related tempurpedic products to the average consumer.
Needless to say, it was a hit with the consumer market as there was nothing like it on the market prior to Tempur-Pedic’s entry. The ability to conform to your body and body temperature and pressure relieving properties soon made tempurpedic products the market leader in memory foam industry.
Lately on, other memory foam companies join in the fray and came up with many other varieties of memory foam products. However, they could not duplicate the success of tempur-pedic products.
Part of the reason for this is most other memory foam has a lower density per foot than tempurpedic. Typically, tempurpedic products has 5.3 lb/cubic density while other memory foam products are in the range of 2.5 to 4 lb/cubic density.
The higher the density of memory foam material, the more cushioning effect it has. The higher density is also one of the reasons why tempurpedic products cost more than other memory foam products.
Another property of tempurpedic products is its visco-elastic ability. The visco-elastic material will soften and conform to your body contours and temperature. The lower the temperature, the more rigid the memory foam material.
Tempur-Pedic has also perfected the memory foam technique, something other companies have not done. The memory foam manufacturing process is inherently complicated and not easily duplicated. This has enable them to produce better quality memory foam mattress and other products.
Though many companies have tried to imitate the visco-elastic and density of tempurpedic memory foam, none have come close to it and this is the reason why tempurpedic products continue to be well liked by consumers even though the cost is higher than other memory foam products. Consumers have come to associate better quality with tempurpedic products.

I want to get a memory foam mattress. I thought it may help with my back pain, but they’re awfully expensive for a big chunk of foam, so i would like to know if they’re worth it.
I love mine!! My husband also has back pain and he says he will never sleep on anything else. But shop around for a better price we got ours at Sam’s club for 300 bucks. My parents got one from walmart for268. Another friend payed 750 for one at a mattress store. All are the same. Good luck
I am in desperate need of a new mattress, but unfortunately can not afford a quality mattress at this time. Would a memory foam mattress pad be the best option at this point? Can anyone recommend a decent one as well? Any info is greatly appreciated.
memory foam helps you sleep great. I have a memory foam pillow and that has improved the quality of my sleep.
try these:
http://www.healthyfoundations.com/toppers.html
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B0002Y5FMM
http://www.kohls.com/products/product_page_multiple0.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=239631573
the target and kohls are better in my opinion..of course you should read about it and see which one suits you best…but they will improve the quality of your sleep dramatically! good luck.
I have a memory foam mattress topper now and I like it but would like to buy one a little thicker. I do not remember what brand the one I currently have is. What is the best brand to buy to help with back and hip pain through the night?
walmart, they have a thin & thick, my kid like the thin one, the thick is a little pricier, but I think they’re good!
I’ve done some research and I know what I like, but it has come down to these two (I looked at some of the Overstock toppers, but I felt these two will match well for their price as well):
2.0" Visco2 Ventilated Mattress Enhancer:
http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Studio-Ventilated-Mattress-Enhancer/dp/B000LQB246/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=bedbath&qid=1244072551&sr=1-4
or
Sleep Better 2-Inch visco elastic memory foam Mattress Topper
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A8BU0G/ref=pop
I chose the 2-inch because I like firm beds, so I don’t think the 3-inches would help too much and as far as density goes, I feel like anything over 2 lbs/cubic ft is fine. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Here are two other mattress toppers my friend suggested:
Visco Memory Foam 2.5 in Mattress Topper
http://www.smartbargains.com/go.sb?pagename=prod&fcloc=product&deptid=3&catid=1400&prodid=3030328224
Serta Rejuvenator 4-inch Mattress Topper
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Serta-Rejuvenator-4-inch-Mattress-Topper/3298223/product.html?sec_iid=33969
Are they worth anything I should look into?
They both look like good toppers and the prices are great (and free shipping). If you’re sure 2 inches are comfortable for you, it would make no sense to spend a lot more money for 3 inches.
Just a thought, if you’re one of those people who can’t sleep if it’s too hot or if you sweat a lot, the ventilated topper would probably be better, although more expensive. However, if not, and if you have AC, why spend the extra $50?
I sleep on a full 10 inch memory foam bed and don’t think I could ever go back to sleeping on a conventional mattress.
Don’t forget to buy a mattress pad to protect your new topper!
Edit: I looked at the 2 you added and still think the first 2 options are the best value.
A lot of manufacturers have started producing memory foam mattresses. This has caused the price of memory foam to come down significantly, and finally become an affordable product for everyone. And while this has also meant that a good number of quality memory foams have been introduced, it has also let low quality products come in as well.
Memory foam mattresses are not a commodity item, but not all are created equal either. Just as a word of caution, you should avoid the really cheap versions of mattresses and pillows on the market. Their material density is usually not of the highest quality and will never provide you with the same sense of quality as their counterparts.
Here are some more words of caution. As you are looking for memory foam mattresses, be cautious of what type of foam it is. Some manufacturers have been found putting fillers in between the foam so that they can make more money with lesser quality. This also does not make this mattress a true memory foam mattress either. One of the nicest foams that you should purchase is the 5 lb memory foam, because of its level of comfort that it supplies to you.
One last thing to know about memory foam mattresses is how long it will be good for. This is an important consideration, because some memory foams feel great to start, with but will deteriorate as you use them more and more. Always stick with those products that have been tested and proven reliable when you are buying your memory foam. Just like for example with a car, you will find it greatly to your advantage to go with a product that has a proven history of success in the long run.
Given the above mentioned issues, it is encouraged that you carefully examine the density of the mattress, the source of the foam, and the product as well. You can always trust the bigger name brands because they have a true stake in staying on top of the market with the highest quality product. As with most things in life, you will always get what you pay for because nothing in this life is free. If something or an offer sounds too good to be true, then it normally is just that, too good to be true. Paying a bit more for the better company and product can only serve your better interests in the long run.
